Here's our top three tips to help you get around, stay safe, and make the most of your student life in Perth.
Explore Perth
Travel around Perth easily with Transperth. To save money, get a SmartRider card, which gives students discounted fares. Head to their website to find out where you can buy a card and top it up online or at stations. Use the Transperth app or website to plan your journey and check timetables in real time. There’s a free CAT bus service in Perth, Fremantle, and Joondalup, perfect for getting around without spending a cent.
Staying Safe
In an emergency, dial 000 for police, fire, or ambulance—this number is free to call from any phone in Australia. For non-emergency police assistance, call 131 444 (e.g., reporting a minor crime or suspicious activity). It's a good idea to save these numbers in your phone. Our team at Beatty Lodge are always available if you require assistance. Come see our reception team during the day, our night manager can be reached on 0417988373 and our lobby telephone is free to use for all residents.
Student Support
StudyPerth connects you with everything you need to thrive. They are the official education and student support hub for international students in Perth, offering a wide range of resources to help you settle in and make the most of your time in WA. Their Student Hub in the city provides free support services, including job search assistance, wellbeing workshops, student events and a welcoming space to study or relax.

There are numerous national support services available to students that can help in various areas, including mental health, academic support, financial aid and more. Always remember to have your identification, student visa and enrolment information with you in order to get the assistance you need.
Lifeline
If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just need someone to talk to, Lifeline can help. Available 24/7, Lifeline provides free and confidential support from trained counsellors. If you're facing emotional distress or crisis, mental health concerns, or simply need a listening ear, you can contact Lifeline by calling 13 11 14 or visiting their website.
Health Direct
Health Direct provides free, reliable health information and advice accessible via their website, mobile app, and a 24/7 helpline at 1800 022 222. They offers tools such as a symptom checker, and a service finder to locate nearby healthcare providers including hospitals, pharmacies, doctor and dental surgeries.
Study Assist
StudyAssist provides information on higher education loans and support. Offering valuable resources on financial assistance, details on scholarships and grants. As well as guidance on understanding the Australian higher education system, key dates, and student rights and obligations.
Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO)
International students have the same workplace rights and protections as all other employees, regardless of their visa status. Australia's national workplace relations regulator, providing free advice and assistance to all workers, including international students. For assistance about your workplace rights, visit the FWO's website or contact their Infoline at 13 13 94.
Legal Aid
Legal Aid WA offers free or low-cost legal advice, information, and support. Whether you're dealing with employment rights, visas, personal matters, or other legal concerns, their team can help you understand your rights and options. Students can access a range of services online or book appointments for confidential support.
National Student Ombudsman
The National Student Ombudsman provides free, independent support for international students with complaints about private education providers in Australia. If you’ve tried to resolve an issue with your college or institution and need further help, the Ombudsman can review your case and make sure you're treated fairly.
